"Karbala", a full-length story about a little-known battle the Poles fought with al-Qaeda in Iraq in 2004, is currently being shoot. The premiere of the film, co-produced by Agora and distributed by NEXT FILM, is scheduled for autumn 2015.
In this evidence-based production star, among others: Bartłomiej Topa, Antoni Królikowski, Leszek Lichota, Michał Żurawski and Piotr Żurawski. The film is being directed by Krzysztof Łukaszewicz.
The film takes place in the Iraqi city of Karbala, in the midst of the war in Iraq. Dozens of Polish and Bulgarian soldiers refute the attacks of Al-Qaeda and As-Sadra militants that attack the building of City Hall, where the arrested terrorists are being held. Although the soldiers lose contact with the base and almost all ammunition, they manage to fend off the latest attack without losing a single soldier. This way they win the biggest battle Poland has fought Since the World War II.
On Friday, July 25th, the filming began in Warsaw's district of Żerań, where an impressive set design (a work of Marek Warszewski) was constructed. The set includes not only the City Hall, but also the streets of Karbala, police stations, bazaars and shops, creating one of the most spectacular set designs in the history of Polish cinema. The cinematography is being done by Arek Tomiak. The filming has already began on July 15th in Opole, where the scenes with pyrotechnic effects and helicopters were realized. The landscapes will be shot in Kurdistan.
Consulting on the film is Lieutenant Colonel Grzegorz Kaliciak - commanding officer during the defense of City Hall, who is the prototype of the main character, portrayed by Bartłomiej Topa.
The Ministry of National Defence Republic of Poland helds the patronage over the project. Documentary and Feature Film Production Company is the producer, Agora SA and the Bulgarian production company Miramar Films are the co-producers. The film is co-financed by the Polish Film Institute. The film is distriubuted by NEXT FILM.
