The largest  chain of stores in Poland  "Biedronka" supports seniors with the amount of PLN 1 million in the charity campaign "Hope" initiated by the Agora Publishing House

The largest  chain of stores in Poland

“Biedronka” supermarket chain has joined the donors in the charity campaign "Hope", where since July 9 2020, everyone can buy the book "Hope". The network donated over PLN 1 000 000 to help seniors. From the beginning of the campaign, the book is also available at Empik stores. Previously, over PLN 190 000 have already been credited to the initiative's account thanks to which the first centers for seniors received aid.

"Hope" is a literary charity campaign initiated by the Agora Publishing House and Polish prominent writers, reporters and poets as part of which a book composed of texts by, among others, Olga Tokarczuk, Wiesław Myśliwski, Hanna Krall, Joanna Bator, Mariusz Szczygieł, Andrzej Stasiuk and Magdalena Grzebałkowska was published. Everyone involved in the initiative and the book's creation work as volunteers - all proceeds from the sale of the anthology support nursing homes for seniors who are at the highest risk of infection and the most severe course of COVID-19. The centers are selected by the Agora Foundation in cooperation with the Polish Commissioner for Human Rights - partner and patron of the project.

- We are contacting representatives of the centers that we plan to support. These are fantastic conversations! We learn about what homes or hospices do for their residents, how they cope in a pandemic, what they fear in the coming months, what their most urgent needs are. Hence, we know where the funds for beddings, rehabilitation beds, additional nursing aid or looms for occupational therapy will be useful. In these conversations, we meet people and stories that give great power to conduct this project - says Anna Kołtunowicz, vice president of the Agora Foundation.

Since May 22, 2020 - that is, when the book was available in pre-sale, PLN 193,236 was credited to the account of the action, thanks to which the organizers could already help the first care centers. The Biedronka network joined the campaign, supporting the initiative with the amount of PLN 1,062,038. "Hope" is available on the shelves of the stores from Thursday, July 9 2020.

- Biedronka company has always supported the development of readership in Poland, and from the beginning of the pandemic, it also supported Poles and the Polish economy with the help of special programs aimed at, a.o. to seniors. The book "Hope", available from today in the chain stores, is another such activity combining charity with the promotion of outstanding Polish literature, which is why we could not fail to participate in it - assures Arkadiusz Mierzwa, communication director at the Biedronka network.

The project was also joined by Polish musicians who, referring to the popular song "Over the rainbow", created a specific anthem of the action "Hope All Stars - Over the rainbow". The composer Krzysztof Herdzin is responsible for the arrangement of the piece, and Jacek Cygan wrote the Polish version of the text. The most eminent names of the Polish music scene lent their voices - a total of 21 people took part in the recordings. The song "Over the Rainbow" with the accompanying music video can be found on the YouTube channel: here. More information about the musical version of the project can be found here.

The partners of the campaign are the the Polish Commissioner for Human Rights, Agora Foundation and Empik.

All information about the project, authors' statements and fragments of texts as well as quotes from the book "Hope" is available on Facebook (just in Polish language version): www.facebook.com/pg/nadziejaakcjiarytatywna.

Project organizers and partners encourage all media, institutions and organizations to join the action and jointly help senior citizens. Anyone who would like to take part in the initiative is invited to contact: nadzieja@agora.pl.
