The innovative project of "Gazeta Wyborcza" won funding from the Google Digital News Initiative fund

The innovative project of

"Harmony. Smarter reader's journey", the "Gazeta Wyborcza’s" project will be co-financed from the Google DNI fund. Thanks to the support granted in the 5th round of the Digital News Initiative program, the daily’s team will accelerate further digital development of "Gazeta Wyborcza" through an innovative tool allowing Polish publishers to combine advertising and subscription business models. This solution will also provide more effective personalization of the reader's path, improving the user experience.

- "Gazeta Wyborcza" successfully develops its paid digital offer, being at the forefront of the European media. However, like most publishers in Poland, every day we face the technological challenges associated with the management of advertising offers and digital subscription offers targeted at users. An additional problem is the maladjustment to the Polish language of automated content analysis systems that allow drawing conclusions about users' behavior in real time. Our new tool, which we shall create thanks to funding from the Google DNI, will allow us to obtain higher digital revenues from various sources due to the cooperation of two existing business models, and - thanks to new reports on users’ behavior - will ensure better matching of the content to their needs or interests. For our team, this is the next step in the development of the digital offer and paywall, as well as the way to more efficiently generate revenue related to the strong online position of "Gazeta Wyborcza" - explains Jerzy Wójcik, publisher of Gazeta Wyborcza.

"Harmony" won the co-financing in the category of large projects considered in the 5th - and also the last but one - round of the DNI program. The "Gazeta Wyborcza’s" project is based on automatic data analysis and use of advanced technology; it will be implemented by an interdisciplinary team of the daily with the support of experts - data scientists and scientists. Its development is planned for over a year since the moment the fund was granted. The final version of the tool will be commercially available also for other publishers in Poland.

Digital News Initiative is a collaboration of Google with publishers from all over Europe in order to develop high-quality journalism through technology and innovation. Publishers can apply for co-financing of innovative projects from the DNI fund - in the 5th round of the program, the organizers paid particular attention to projects that strongly focus on monetization and innovation.
On Tuesday, July 24th this year Google has announced a list of projects that will receive support - over EUR 21 million will be transferred to the developers of 98 innovative projects from 28 European countries. In Poland, 6 projects have received the grant, including one submitted by Agora.
