“Twój Vincent” with an Oscar nomination

“Twój Vincent” with an Oscar nomination

“Twój Vincent”, a painted animation distributed by NEXT FILM, is nominated for an Oscar in the Best Animated Feature category. Dorota Kobiela's and Hugh Welchman's film have already won, among others, the European Film Award, and nominations for the Golden Globe and BAFTA awards. The 2018 Oscars will be presented during a gala ceremony on Sunday, March 4th.

I am very proud that our film is the first Polish Oscar-nominated feature animation. I am also proud to be one of this year's two female directors nominated in this category, where so far only 4 women have been among the 72 filmmakers. Perhaps this year we will start to change this imbalance. But most of all, I am proud of my painters (60% of whom are women), actors and actresses, and my team. They believed in something that many considered crazy - painting the whole film with oil paints on canvas, by hand. I am only a small part of a big team of dreamers! - stresses Dorota Kobiela, director and screenwriter of “Twój Vincent”.

Hugh Welchman, co-author of the film, adds: - “Twój Vincent” is not only the first Polish Oscar-nominated feature animation, it is also the first Polish feature animation directed by a woman, my wife Dorota. I am very proud of her and grateful to her for including me in this amazing journey as a co-writer and co-director. I am grateful to the American Film Academy for appreciating and recognizing our work born of love. This is really extremely important for small films - like ours - competing with studios that have hundreds of billions of dollars at their disposal.

So far, Polish animators have been appreciated by the American Film Academy only twice - in 1983 Zbigniew Rybczyński won a statuette for his short film “Tango”, and in 2008 the Polish-British “Piotruś i wilk”. (director: Suzie Templeton) won Oscar in the same category. The producer of “Piotruś i wilk” is Hugh Welchman. The nomination for “Twój Vincent” is the first such distinction for Polish feature animation.

In Poland, the production distributed by NEXT FILM has already been seen by over 376 thousand viewers. The film is still in cinemas. The trailer of the Polish language version with the participation of Olga Frycz, Danuta Stenka, Zofia Wichłacz, Jerzy Bończak, Jerzy and Maciej Stuhr, Józef Pawłowski and Robert Więckiewicz is available on the NEXT FILM channel on YouTube.
