“Gazeta Wyborcza” along with the 8 European publishers was selected for The GNI Subscriptions Lab program. Together with the media teams from 7 countries, the largest Polish opinion-forming daily will work on strengthening the digital subscriptions offer by exchanging experiences and jointly searching for the most effective solutions.
In April this year the participants of the Google News Initiative (GNI) Subscriptions Lab program were presented. The program is organized by Google in cooperation with the International News Media Association (INMA) and FT Strategies, the consulting division of ”The Financial Times”.
The GNI Subscriptions Lab is a nine-month program to help eight European publishers strengthen their digital subscriptions capabilities and grow reader revenue.
Out of 54 applications for the program, 8 media teams were selected: "La Croix" (France), "Dennik N" (Slovakia), "Gazeta Wyborcza" (Poland), "The Independent" (United Kingdom), "Courier "(Austria), "MittMedia "(Sweden), "El Mundo" (Spain) and "RP Online "(Germany).
As part of The GNI Subscriptions Lab, European publishers will jointly seek opportunities to improve each stage of digital subscriptions, as well as share their successes and knowledge necessary to implement this process. They will experiment with new solutions, e.g. trying to introduce solutions from one country to another and using the experience of program organizers. The goal is to contribute to building a sustainable media business model based on paid subscriptions.
- Today we are even more satisfied with our participation in The GNI Subscriptions Lab, than when the recruitment results were announced. Although the current time is a period of intensive work for all the media outlets and the program is intense, we are convinced that focusing on a common goal and working under the guidance of experienced colleagues from the “Financial Times”, INMA and Google will significantly accelerate the development of our subscription business - comments Dorota Adamczyk-Mroczek, chief digital revenue officer of "Gazeta Wyborcza" and Wyborcza.pl.
Richard Gingras, VP News, Google says - It’s crucial for publishers of all sizes to find ways to grow their reader revenue to ensure a sustainable future, especially in these uncertain times. This partnership with FT Strategies and INMA will enable publishers to test and develop new business models and is part of Google’s commitment to do more to help the news industry in the digital age, through our Google News Initiative.
The effects of work carried out within The GNI Subscriptions Lab will be presented in October 2020, during the INMA Media Innovation Week conference.
“Gazeta Wyborcza” has already participated in various international development initiatives. Among others its project "Harmony. Smarter reader’s journey”, supporting the further digital development of the newspaper, was co-financed by Google in the 5th round of the Digital News Initiative.
A few days ago, “Gazeta Wyborcza” has won the WAN-IFRA European Digital Media Award - Member's Choice in the Best Paid Content Strategy category. Members of the WAN-IFRA association - media market experts and practitioners from around the world have appreciated the introduction of auto-renewable content subscriptions at Wyborcza.pl in online voting.
