Check this out! Sonar.Wyborcza.pl officially launched

Today, October 4th, Sonar, a modern website, was launched to show the world and the activities of politicians in news, numbers and charts. Sonar is also an unbiased tool for Internet users to develop their interest in specific topics or persons. The website, a joint project of “Gazeta Wyborcza” and Wyborcza.pl, was developed together with Laboratorium EE and with support provided by Google’s Digital News Initiative.

Sonar.Wyborcza.pl is based exclusively on data and facts. It collects and presents in one place the latest information on political and social life and Polish politicians, and in the form of attractive infographics shows statistics on the most important topics and persons. It uses news, but also data from Facebook and Twitter to create unique lists, such as rankings, visualizations and calendars. Users can customize their settings and indicate their chosen location, observed politicians and topics they want to follow. If they solve quizzes and answer questions in surveys, the system will save their answers. Adding to this other behaviours in the service (visiting particular subpages), algorithms will select the content for a specific reader, and they will find out themselves for e.g. which party is closest to them.

– Sonar is a place where you can learn more or organize your knowledge about the most important topics and people who make the most important decisions in our country. We objectively compare their credibility, integrity and reliability. We try to show how their actions affect our lives - says Bartosz Stodulski and Vadim Makarenko, Sonar's project leaders. - In a simple, visually attractive and interactive way, we explain complex issues in such a way that they are understandable, interesting and tailored to the interests of Internet users. They can choose interesting topics and events for them and the politicians they want to follow.

Sonar.Wyborcza.pl combines content from various sources - it is mainly factual materials created by the editorial staff of the domestic department and local branches of “Gazeta Wyborcza”, in which persons or topics selected by the user appear, biographies of politicians from the partner service Mam Prawo Wiedzieć [English: I have the Right to Know], as well as data downloaded in real time from the websites of the Polish Sejm and Senate, Google Trends, Facebook and Twitter. Under the slogan “Tylko u nas” [English: Only with us] special, original materials of the Sonar.Wyborcza.pl team are published.

Most of the data is not in the form of an article, because they create subpages, such as a politician's profile, which is a kind of dossier in which we can check their profession, age, electoral ward, key votes, attendance at sessions, ideologically close friends from the benches, etc.

– In this project we want to move away from opinion journalism. We want all our materials to be based on reliable data, which we get from various sources, sometimes automatically, and sometimes manually. From the vast archives of “Gazeta Wyborcza” we choose only news, reports and analyses, avoiding commentaries and columns. Those tired of opinion journalism will be able to see the hard data files of politicians - says Vadim Makarenko, head of the data department of “Gazeta Wyborcza”.

A lot of technological innovations were used to create the Sonar and to show the facts and data in a personalized way. Thanks to Data Ocean, an advanced data acquisition and analysis system developed by Agora, the most modern aggregator of content and statistics in the Polish media was created. We would like this to be an example of data-driven publishing, i.e. a website with content published on the basis of data - says Bartosz Stodulski, President of the IT company Laboratorium EE.

Sonar.Wyborcza.pl offers a clear, modern layout - it looks more like an entertainment website than a news website, it is intuitive to use and engaging, thanks to published quizzes and the possibility of comparing one' views with parties and other users.

The website is available to all network users as part of the subscription system for digital content of “Gazeta Wyborcza”. On the other hand, the Sonar as a tool enabling personalization of one's interests, i.e. tracking specific topics and selected people, may only be used by logged in users and content subscribers on the Wyborcza.pl website.

Sonar.Wyborcza.pl was created by the team of “Gazeta Wyborcza” and the Laboratorium EE.

The website and used analytical tools won a grant from the Digital News Initiative fund run by Google for the development of media innovation.

The launch of Sonar.Wyborcza.pl is supported by self-promotion in “Gazeta Wyborcza”, in Wyborcza.pl and in social media associated with “Gazeta Wyborcza”.
