23-11-2005
"Gazeta Wyborcza" joined the campaign organized by Amnesty International. The objective of the campaign is to inform the Polish society about violation of freedom of speech in Belarus. It aims at encouraging Poles to help restore freedom of expression in Belarus.

To support the campaign, today's cover page of "Gazeta Wyborcza" featured crossed out fragments of articles imitating censorship. Underneath we printed a motto "This is how freedom of speech is respected in Belarus".

The special issue of "Gazeta" presented a history of how the freedom of speech was violated in Belarus. The last page presented the photographs of two journalists Andrzej Pisalnik and Mikola Markiewicz with their lips taped and articles on their work in Belarus.

"Gazeta Wyborcza" sold with a special postcard addressed to Alexander Lukashenko, the President of the Republic of Belarus, which was a protest against censorship and persecution of the political opposition.
